The meet served as the state qualifier and Manson got 13 athletes through to EWU next weekend. Some athletes were expected to excel, others we were hopeful for, and others were downright surprises. On to the details.
The meet got off on the right foot as Casey Sorensen won the shot put by a whopping 6'. It was his first district championship.
Alex Vanderholm also qualified through to state by placing 3rd. He came up clutch by getting his best throw on his 5th attempt to move him from 5th to 3rd.
Next up, our girls 4x200 ran their season's best time of 2:02 and placed a respectable 5th. The team consisted of Eli Leyva, Stephanie Quiroz, Jaque Guillen, and Aylee Neff.
Bailey Stevens began his long day by placing 4th in the 100m, qualifying through to state. Bailey was not feeling well the whole day and got off to a slow start in this race but still ran well enough to break the 12 second barrier.
Cheyanne McFadden completed her high school career by running an outstanding 1600m in a 6 second personal best. Congratulations to her and finishing in fine fashion.
Next up was the boys 4x100 meter relay. We overcame a couple of sketchy handoffs to place 3rd and move on to state. Kudos goes to Bailey as he got the baton in 5th place but he ran down 2 teams to move us up to 3rd and the state berth.
The girls 4x100m relay was the shocking event of the day. The team had produced mediocre results during the season, mostly due to injuries to key runners. We were still not sure of everyone's health entering the race. However, the girls put together the race of the season and placed 2nd, also moving on to state next week. A big pat on the back to Aylee, Itzel, Stephanie, and Ofelia.
Jesse ran to a 7th place finish in the 400m
Eli also placed 7th in the 400.
Marcus ran his second event of the day, placing 3rd in the 800 in a new personal best of 2:05. He will run this event next week at state as well.
Jaque placed 7th in the girls 800.
Over at the field events, Alex topped the 130' mark and placed 2nd in the discus. This moves him onto state in 2 throwing events.
Marcus then proceeded to do his thing by winning the 3200 for the second year in a row. He also got a new personal best in 10:16 and broke his own school record!
The day was topped of by the most exciting race of the day, the boy's 4x400m relay. Manson was ranked 5th going into the race and knew we needed a top 4 finish in order to move onto state. Jesse led off, running a quality opening leg. Ty ran a nice 2nd leg, moving us right behind Brewster at the exchange zone. Paul then ran the race of his life, charging by the Brewster runner on the backstretch and opening up a 5 yard lead for the team. Bailey finished off the race by holding off multiple charges by the Brewster runner and out"gutting" him in the 50 meters to take 4th place. Another feather in the cap is breaking the school record by an incredible 7 seconds! Great job guys.
