It was great to be out on the track again for the first meet of the season. We were at Bridgeport on March 24 with 6 other schools. The weather was HORRIBLE. Cold, wind, rain. Not conducive running/throwing weather.
Weather notwithstanding, the effort and performances were outstanding. The boys team place 2nd overall, which is the highest we have placed as a team in a meet since I have been coach. The girls team placed 4th, but were close to 2nd as well.
We had several new athletes competing in their first track experience. I was very impressed with their efforts and quality of their performances.
Now onto the individual results!
In alphabetical order-
Itzel Castro- Ran an outstanding 200m in under 29.5 seconds, which is one of the fastest times in school history. She also anchored our 3rd place finishing teams in the relays.
Kyla Chavolla- Competed in the 3200 and javelin. Considering the conditions, performed well.
Maria Chavolla- Placed 3rd in the 1600 and 4th in the 800. 1600 was a pr!
Mackenzie Gallaher- First time competing in the shot, discus, and javelin. Looking forward to seeing her improvement as the season goes on.
Adri Guzman- Ran well on the relay team and did long jump and 400m as well.
Thalia Lepley- Did well in the discus, long jump, and 800 meters.
Eli Leyva- Another first time competitor who had a busy day. She set standards in the 100, 200, 400, and was part of the 4x100 relay. Her 400 time was outstanding for her first efforts.
Natalie Martinez- A new thrower to our team as well. Set standards in the shot, discus, and javelin.
Cheyanne McFadden- Fighting an ankle injury, she gutted out a tough 3200 meter race.
Stephanie Quiroz- Our best long jumper, Steph also led off both of our relays and ran the 100m in fine fashion.
Ofelia Rodriguez- Good opening times in the 100 and 200, as well as being a key leg in the relays.
Lia Verduzco- Found time to compete in the discus.
Bianca Vergara- Another new athlete who did well in the hurdles and 200m. Bianca has the prettiest running technique of anyone on the team.
Juan Chavolla- A pr in the 400 and ran well in the 3200 too.
Alex Espinoza- Another new athlete. Ran good times in the 100, 200 and competed in the long jump as well.
Ty Harding- In my opinion, the star of the meet. Ran personal bests in both the 100 and 200 and placed 2nd overall in both. Also did a nice job in the long jump and relay.
Bridger Machus- Competed in the 100, discus, and long jump for the first time.
Jesse Russell- Jesse competed in the 300m hurdles without having jumped over a hurdle in practice the whole year. And won! Also put in a nice pr in the 1600.
Casey Sorensen- Another star of the meet. Casey won the discus with a pr and league leading throw of 122 feet. Placed 2nd in the shot. Threw the javelin and ran in the relay as well.
Paul Toolson- Paul got nice prs in the long jump, triple jump (4 ft. improvement!), and 800m. Also part of the relay team.
Alex Vanderholm- A freshman who competed really well in the shot, discus, and javelin. Will only get better as the year goes on.
Marcus offering Alex some brotherly advice...
Our next meet is Saturday, March 26 at Ephrata. One of the biggest meets of the year. Unfortunately, the weather forecast does not look promising.
I like the pic of Marcus and Panda. I told Marcus to let him know that I didn't care if he went over the scratch line or not...he had better throw past the cone!
ReplyDeleteMany thanks to the photographer! Shannon was a real trooper to be out in during this one...and the envy of many with her rubber boots!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to the whole team - a great start to the new season!
ReplyDeleteand thanks, Kevin :)
Hey next meet you should use my high-speed camera!
ReplyDeleteIs that the same camera you used to take pictures in the bathroom Casey? If so, I don't think my wife is interested.
